Books
In 1947 Mr.
José Gavira, the Librarian, published his catalogue and he talked about
an interesting deposit with over 5000 titles ranging over different subjects
and not reduced to Geography. Since then, the library has grown although its
pilgrimage in search for a final location has resulted in irrecoverable losses,
such as those suffered from the fire that happened when the RSG library was
located at 10, Magdalena street in Madrid.
Fortunately, these problems were solved with the agreement reached with the
Biblioteca Nacional in relation to the deposit of our funds in its premises.
Since 1971, our Library is deposited in the adequate place and available to
every body.
In his catalogue, Gavira made an excellent classification that is fully valid
nowadays and enables looking for any works as well as understanding the relevance
of the copies and of their authors. Subjects range from bibliography to philosophy,
to religion, sociology, the army, economy, sciences or technology, to jurisprudence
or mathematics, apart from Geography in all its branches: general, descriptive,
human, travels and explorations, and mapping.
Logically in a Society founded in the last third of the 19th century, the printing
date of most publications is from that time or later. There are, however, some
books from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, presented by members to the Library.
